Welcome

The Wellington Potters' Association (WPA) welcomes new members. If you have always hankered to play with clay but have not had the opportunity, or if you are an experienced potter, we cater for all levels of interest, experience and competence.

The WPA is based at the Wellington Potters Centre on the edge of Wellington's Green Belt in Thorndon, close to the central city with easy access by public transport. For the historically minded the WPA was incorporated in 1958 and is therefore probably one of the oldest such potters club in the country. Its members are predominantly Wellington based studio and hobby potters but with a significant number of country members who keep in touch with our activities through our monthly Newsletter.

We hold exhibitions at least once a year. Throughout the year we hold specialised weekend workshops with visiting overseas and local tutors.

The club also has an anagama kiln at Horokiwi on the hills overlooking Soames Island that provides opportunities for local potters to undertake wood firing.

Potter in Residence at Wellington Potters’ Association. Calling potters and ceramic artists!

We are offering an opportunity for a potter or ceramic artist to use the Potter-in-Residence studio at Wellington Potters’ Association clubrooms for a 3-month period.  The residency will give someone time for concentrated work, to do some experimenting, get together a body of work, or prepare for an exhibition…… whatever your goal.

The offer is open to potters and ceramic artists from New Zealand and overseas.

Alan Ross is recording the story of WPA’s Te Haunui anagama kiln chapter by chapter. You can follow this story in the Features section of this website.

New Zealand Potters (Inc.)

Registered as an incorporated society in 1965 by an enthusiastic group of potters in Wellington, New Zealand, NZ Potters (Inc.) has grown to become a significant international voice in New Zealand ceramics. The affiliation of about three dozen independent pottery clubs throughout New Zealand together with a number of corporate businesses greatly increases its effective membership. We are a national, not-for-profit organisation representing the interests of practising potters and ceramicists, students of ceramics and all those interested in New Zealand ceramics. We actively support and promote quality, and we encourage and support specialist ceramics education nationally.
