Ice Kiln Firing |
|
NZSP 46th Conference - Roooaring Forties
Location - Invercargill
Date - Easter 2004
Dave Barr was booked to do one of his spectacular Hawaiian drum firings at the Invercargill Convention in April. When Dave died earlier this year we thought it fitting to invite Peter Lange to conduct a firing in memory of Dave and to make it one which Dave would have enjoyed. Peter rose to the occasion with not one but two spectacular firings, building an ice kiln and a cathedral kiln. Here is a series of pictures of the ice kiln, beginning with the arrival of the ice, frozen in a bath. Then follow shots of hollowing out the firing chamber with a chain saw, the tricky task of manouevering the ice into place, and with Phyl Bar, dedicating the firing to Dave. Spraying the chamber with dissolved metallic salts enhanced the already colourful display. Next morning, there was still lots of ice left and the fired pot was revealed.
