Workshop With Baye Riddell
Events
Manawatu Pottery Society Inc.
The slide Show

Location - Fielding Railway Station, Aorangi St, Fielding

Date - 26-Nov-09

Eleven Manawatu Pottery members were lucky enough to attend this workshop with Baye using wooden cradles.

On the Friday evening we started the weekend off with a potluck tea and slide presentation by Baye (inbetween mains and deserts). This was a great way for introductions to be made and to see what type of pottery Baye produces and of course to have lots of laughs. Still not knowing just what we were in for, we had some ideas of what to expect.

Come Saturday morning on a lovely fine day we gathered around and Baye got started by demonstrating just how quickly and easily this type of pottery form evolves.

Baye, a quiet, unassuming man; gradually, casually revealed the extent of his knowledge, skill and humour as he moved among us all. A smile and a nod here, a touch of clay and a suggestion there. His demonstrations soooo understated and effortless.

Not even the trains thundering past us on the station platform (where we were drying our pieces in the sun) brought more than a casual, 'Id move back a bit, if I were you' in response to the train drivers whistle and none too friendly gesture.

This was a straightforward but inspiring project that significantly extended each participants technical range but without over-stretching his or her technical abilities. It showed us a new way of thinking when it comes to hand building and has all sorts of possibilities for further development.

It was super that Gem was able to join in with us for some of the time and all together we had a great weekend with (the essential) lots of laughs and fun mixed in with a great experience.

Kays work sums up the weekend. Baye was impressed with such a variation of work from us all.
