The Elusive Cone 6 - A Salt Glaze Firing by
Alan Ross
A makeshift canopy of tarpaulins to
provide protection against the elements, reminiscent
of a refugee camp, was the first thing to strike a
visitor to the much awaited firing of Flora Christeller's
salt glaze kiln. The kiln is located in Petone behind
the building in which apprentice bricklayers once learned
their trade at the Petone Polytechnic. It was some
of these apprentices who assisted in constructing the
kiln.
The rare opportunity to have pots
fired in a salt glaze kiln attracted tremendous interest
from members with the pots submitted exceeding the
capacity of the kiln; ample reason for organising another
firing in the not too distant future.

Exhibition Selection Workshop with George Kojis
by Judi Smith
Our pottery group, like most, invite members to gather their best works together each year for a combined exhibition that is open to the public.
This is a way of promoting what we do and encouraging others to join.
In the past this process has been something of a mystery so this year, we decided to hold a Selection Workshop where everyone was invited to attend the selection process while the selector gave verbal appraisals and questions and answered were accepted.

The whole week, starting from 5am Sunday 26/6 until 6.30pm Sunday 3/5 was a truly wonderful experience. Dianne, Greg, Andrea, Annette, Jette and myself all get on so well together so we had lots of fun in the people mover. After a good crossing we did a little bit of tiki touring on the way down, arriving at Robin and Pauls at 6.30p.m.

Some of our most talented potters congregate in Turangi these days.

A place to go to spend social leisure time, relax and take in an art and craft experience.

George Kojis at Turangi
by Judi Smith
The first time I heard of George Kojis was in 2005 when I visited Waiariki Institute of Technology in Rotorua&.. when George Andrews was tutor of the Craft Design Course.
George Kojis had just finished a 3-week tutorial. He was gone, but his work was there; exhibited in the polytechs gallery. Platters textured with bubbles, with glazes reflecting the green and blue vibrant waters of Rotoruas lakes. Students were buzzing about the influence he had had on their work.

A Trip to India - Duncan Shearer
by Duncan Shearer
I was recently invited to travel to India to teach glaze theory. This rather unique request came about by serendipity. A combination of my involvement with the Auckland Studio Potters and New Zealand's reputation as a source of pottery excellence led a well connected Indian potter, Paulomi Abhyankar, to ask if anyone wanted to help Indian potters with glaze education when she visited Auckland last year.

There was a good turn out for the Saturday-Sunday workshop in Dunedin with a mixture of OPG members, polytech students, graduates and tutors mingling together, renewing old friendships and swapping news whilst sipping mugs of coffee and tea. Many had attended Jeffs slide show the previous evening and were now divulging information gleaned about his work.

A Trip to Turkey - Peter Lange
by Peter Lange
The city of Eskisehir in Turkey (about 300km west and a little south of Istanbul) is based on a thriving brick and terracotta industry, with 5 large brick factories close to the centre of town. Eskisehir Professor of Ceramics , Zehra Coblani, visited Auckland and during the course of her stay was intrigued by a couple of the brick sculptures I ha d been making. The upshot was an invitation to join a group of clay and brick sculptors from around the world to take part in a sculpture symposium for two weeks in June.
