Riverton Southland
Something Special Gallery was set up in 2004 and exists to showcase New Zealand art and craft of quality.
As a professional weaver Jill Nicholls deplored the demise of the NZ Crafts Council in the 1990's and began planning a gallery showing work of the many established craftspeople she knew, who didn't want to be on the production treadmill but who regularly created lovely pieces for sale.
Following the death of her husband Jim, Jill moved back to Riverton in Southland and found the ideal site on the Southern Scenic Route. Something Special Gallery is run along the lines of a co-op with a manager and sales assistant; works are on consignment and the mark-up is the accountant's nightmare being as low as possible.
Currently as Jill develops her pottery skills she is considering an offer to take the gallery over so there may be changes in the near future.
