What's
in it for me?
The following statement was written by Anneke Borren at
the last annual convention of the society in response to
the question "What's in it for me?" that comes
up from time to time when the pros and cons of society membership
are discussed.
Why
be an NZSP Member?
- to foster the growth awareness
of clay in New Zealand
- to have an input into being part of a significant
aspect of our cultural identity (which incidently
is more recognised outside of New Zealand than
in - "the old story")
- to recognise the pioneering work done by our "Golden
Oldies" of the last fifty years; and through
participation enhance that beginning.
- to recognise
- that NZP is a "national" organisation,
regardless of its size
- that it is, in terms of governmental thinking,
the only way potters have a voice in any
cultural debate, and positioning.
- that it is the only way in for
other countries' clay organisations, and
credibility for their government representatives,
and the way out for our
ceramicists regardless of an individual approach,
and as a government sanctioned backing.
"Active interest" will always bring one
unexpected returns and personally NZP has given
me a sense of cultural belonging which, as a 16 year
old Dutch immigrant from 1963, would have been difficult
to achieve otherwise.

Anneke is a past president of NZP and a long standing
respected member. She continues to work successfully in the
field of ceramics and more recently in the sculpting of Oamaru
stone.
