Welcome to nzpotters.com

- the website for New Zealand Potters

About NZPotters

It is a great honour to welcome you to our NZ Potters Web Site designed and developed by Lawrence Ewing.  You will soon appreciate what a brilliant site it is. Few web sites would be more comprehensive. Please use it to keep informed and to help us inform others.

Of particular interest is the facility for members to be able to create their own pages with a profile and images of their work.   This will give you an overall view of what is happening in New Zealand and showing the great diversity of work produced by potters from the bottom of the South Island to the top of the North.

Several exhibitions are held throughout New Zealand, which are regularly shown on the web site.  There is an annual National Exhibition held by NZ Potters Inc in a different centre each year, along side our conference as well as several regional exhibitions - all showcasing what members are doing with clay.  In April 2010 the annual exhibition and conference will be held in Dunedin and in 2011 it will be in Auckland. This is a time when potters from throughout the country meet to exchange ideas, attend demonstrations featuring overseas and local artists,  and socialize, We have a lot of fun. We hold a bi-annual Students Digital Image Exhibition on this web site where students submit a digital image of their latest work.   Judges from every region select the winners and viewers are invited to vote for their popular choice. Our Webmaster Lawrence Ewing is interested in developing this area of exhibitions so watch this space.  All these exhibitions throughout New Zealand help to promote clay as a serious medium and encourage its appreciation in the public eye.

NZ Potters publish a bi-monthly newsletter – Clay News – that is distributed to all members and member pottery groups.   Our editor Josephine Waring collects articles from all over New Zealand, photos from various exhibitions as well as technical tips, profiles of different potters and other matters of interest to members. We also plan to feature articles from the archives and run a continuous calendar of what is going on in the way of exhibitions, and special ceramic events  from throughout the country. You are invited to contribute to these features.

The Touring Potter Scheme is co-ordinated by Claire Bryers, enabling a Master Potter to tour throughout New Zealand taking workshops from the smallest to the largest clubs most years.  This scheme gives a Master Potter the experience of holding workshops and students the advantage of excellent tuition to further personal artistic development.

NZ Potters has a long history and became registered as an incorporated society in 1965 under the name of New Zealand Society of Potters Inc.  The Society has as its mission “to celebrate excellence and nurture creativity in clay in New Zealand. There are challenges ahead and I can assure you that the executive will embrace them with vigour and creativity.
