CHEDDAR VALLEY POTTERY

I work in partnership with my husband ,Stuart in our Cheddar Valley Pottery Studio. 19 years ago, we purchased the old derelict Cheddar Valley Dairy factory, & my expanding pottery hobby became a full time occupation.

I trained at Ardmore Teachers College with Peter Stitchbury as my pottery tutor, and this is where it all began. As we raised our family and we moved from school house to school house, we moved a wee electric kiln and treadle wheel with us. I sold my work through retail outlets and markets at this stage. As the family got older, a bigger kiln & electric wheel, were purchased. When the wood shed was no longer big enough, the Cheddar Valley factory property was purchased.

For 11 years I potted on my own, fulltime, selling from our studio, and suppling several shops. 8 years ago Stuart left behind the long hours of a teaching Principal & joined me fulltime. The pottery grew, to include a unique range of domestic& garden ware, & sculpture. We now have two Cobcraft 9.5 cu ft electric kilns, two wheels, and three pug mills, and utilise every inch of the old factory. The venture has worked, exceeding our dreams.

We create 'his, hers and ours' in Southern Clays terracotta,& Potters Clay GB2,and Nelson white, stoneware clays, producing some 500 different items.

Our garden ware range includes Nikau bird baths, waterfall bowls, gargoyles, sundials, whimsical Pukeko, cats, woodpigeons, gecko & tuatara ,and other large sculptures reflecting N.Z. flora.

We personalise platters featuring customers pets, cars, homes, and unique designs for birth and wedding platters. We produce a personified series of kiwi and pukeko “can do anything” plates and mugs. Our contemporary N.Z. and local designs feature ferns, native birds and White Island.

Our domestic ware includes platters, bowls, casseroles, pasta, dessert, and noodle bowls, salt pigs, garlic bread servers, storage jars, mugs & jugs, pet bowls, to name but a few, all in a range of glazes, from a beautiful deep blue, a soft green, and an off white with over-glaze decoration. Margaret does all the throwing, Stuart the slab work and underglaze decoration, but we both carry individual pieces through to completion.

We now sell all our work from our studio, and find this an enjoyable part of the process, as is sharing the creating process, with visitors.
